According to Robert Viera, making music is like painting in a canvas, where we can gradually fill the space with sounds, filters, patterns, structures, and counterpoint. Hopefully, the instrumental song will secretly capture the composer’s spirit, but ultimately the listener will discover a personal story and lyrics.
His story seems to be motivated by the film “Electric Dreams,” which made him realize that making music with computers is feasible and this would become one of his dreams. Since the music gear that we can find today was not readily available at that point in time-space, he pursued a career in electronic engineering, in part to build his MIDI interfaces and DAW.
As others self-taught EDM musicians, he started by sequencing electronic versions of ABBA and other bands that musically inspired him (e.g., The Beatles, Kraftwerk, New Order, Sash, Faithless). During the 90s, his first projects aimed to make L.A. folk songs fresh and aesthetic.
As he quotes “Life is the realization of our youth’ dreams.” In 2018 he published two EDM covers of Ecuadorian folk songs: Lindo Quito de Mi Vida (an Andean Passacaglia), and Pobre Corazón (a “San Juanito” – a native Andean musical genre).
